It is particularly alarming that, according to the 2021 International Primary School Reading Study (IGLU), around 25% of fourth-grade students in Germany do not achieve the reading skills necessary for a successful transition to secondary school.
"I was deeply moved by the alarming figures on reading difficulties in Germany, especially among children. As a family-owned company, we see it as our responsibility to actively contribute to overcoming this challenge and to improve educational opportunities for the next generation in the long term," said Hermann Butting.
To strengthen the reading skills of elementary school students, BUTTING is therefore committed to introducing the kluug reading promotion app in elementary schools in the districts surrounding its production sites in Knesebeck and Schwedt.
In cooperation with LEAD Lernen digital GmbH, BUTTING is providing schools with free licenses for the app – initially for three years. The aim is to offer pupils a playful, individually tailored opportunity to learn to read and improve their reading skills.
Promoting education – strengthening the region
As a family-owned company, BUTTING has deep roots in the regions. The company has been committed to promoting education and young talent for many years. Projects such as the “Haus der kleinen Forscher” (Little Scientists' House) and financial support for educational institutions are just a few examples of its social commitment.
With the kluug app, BUTTING is expanding this commitment: The app offers students individualized training supported by reading games at over 400 difficulty levels. kluug was developed in collaboration with scientists and reading experts to help children learn to read in a fun and systematic way.
Sustainable reading promotion through digitalization
The kluug app was launched in the 2025/26 school year in several schools in grades 2 and 3. In the following years, fourth-grade classes will also be able to benefit from the support. The application combines modern technology with scientifically proven methods to provide targeted support for children. Teachers also gain insights into their students' learning progress, which makes it easier to integrate the app into their lessons.
Hermann Butting is visibly proud of this initiative: “With this offer, BUTTING is setting an example for promoting education through digitalization and at the same time strengthening the future of our region. BUTTING is thus remaining true to its responsibility as a ‘future provider’ and making an important contribution to sustainable education in society.”
