Dr. Hannshermann Butting, the former owner of the family owned company, would have turned 100 today. This day also marks the 25th anniversary of his death. This is an opportunity to reflect on the life and work of a man who had a significant impact on the history of BUTTING for many years.
The company's origins date back to 1777, when it was founded as a coppersmith's workshop in Crossen next to the river Oder, which is now part of Poland. Following the Second World War, the Butting family left their home and started afresh in Knesebeck. Here, they began rebuilding their business in modest circumstances. In 1955, Dr. Hannshermann Butting joined the company and, thanks to his entrepreneurial vision, developed it into a globally successful stainless steel processor.
Born on 25 July 1925, he became involved in the family business at an early age. After completing his Abitur, studying in Göttingen where he met his future wife Ingeburg, and obtaining a doctorate in law, he took on a leadership role during a period of significant change. Under his leadership, BUTTING developed into a globally renowned manufacturer of high-quality stainless steel tubes and components. With entrepreneurial courage, a clear set of values, and an eye for technical progress, he set the course for long-term success.
Following German reunification, Dr. Hannshermann Butting seized the historic opportunity to build a symbolic bridge back to his former homeland by establishing a second company location in Schwedt next to the river Oder. By doing so, he combined economic commitment with social responsibility and made a deeply personal gesture by returning to the Oder, the river on which the roots of his family, his company and his own life lie. It was on the river that Dr. Hannshermann Butting developed his passion for rowing, a sport he pursued with great dedication. In his new home, he generously supported the “Isenhagener Land rowing club” from the time of its foundation in 1975. He loved going on rowing trips with young people. His love of nature accompanied him throughout his life. Whether in the forest or on the water, it was here that he found peace and strength.
Dr. Hannshermann Butting had five children. His son, Hermann, took over the management of the company in 2000 and continues to lead the BUTTING Group to this day, upholding the values instilled by his father.
Despite his success, Dr. Hannshermann Butting remained down-to-earth. He was direct and straightforward, communicating on equal terms and loving open exchange with his employees. They affectionately and respectfully called him “The Doctor”.
Dr. Hannshermann Butting's life's work has left its mark on the development of the company, in the hearts of his family and employees, and in our region.
