Big bore pipes for the chemical industry

The manufacturing of high-quality stainless steel pipes with longitudinal welds is the focus of BUTTING's business activities. Our company's capabilities are demonstrated in a wide selection of products for a variety of industries. Recently, we were able to prove this for the chemical industry: more than 120 metric tonnes of sheet metal are processed into DN 800 pipes at BUTTING in Könnern and delivered.

Michael Fürstenberg, Senior Sales Manager at BUTTING Knesebeck, is convinced of the strategy of the two production facilities for pipes: "At BUTTING Könnern, we have another competitive site with lean structures. It is not only geared to major projects, but also to short-term requirements for repairs or drop shipments, especially for common dimensions and materials. This means that we can offer our customers short, reliable delivery times for fast-track requirements, completing BUTTING's broad range of products and services."

BUTTING has been approved as a supplier by major chemical companies such as Bayer, BASF and Infraserv Hoechst for many decades. We were commissioned to produce longitudinally welded pipes for a major investment from the chemical industry: a total of almost 1 200 metres with a pipe size of 813 x 5 mm were to be produced in the material 1.4541. For this purpose, the plates were largely purchased directly from the steel mill, partly supplemented by material from the company's own warehouse.

Our customer benefited from the fact that BUTTING has two production sites for high-quality pipes in Germany. At the Könnern site, capacities for the production of big bore pipes were able to be used at short notice. At this site, the pipes are produced with two longitudinal welds each in manufacturing lengths of 6 m. A 3-roll bending machine was used for the rounding-off process. The pipes were successfully tested in accordance with EN 10217-7 TC1 as well as the specification PAS 1057-11 / DIN 21057 for process engineering plants, which was developed by the chemical industry.
