Remembering Dr Hannshermann Butting - an extraordinary personality

On 25 July, the BUTTING Group commemorates an extraordinary personality: Dr Hannshermann Butting, former owner of the family business, would have been 100 years old on this day. It is also the 25th anniversary of his death. Time and occasion to remember the life and life's work of a man who had a decisive influence on the history of BUTTING for decades.

The origins of the company date back to 1777, when it was founded in Crossen an der Oder - in what is now Poland - as a coppersmith's workshop. After the Second World War, the Butting family had to leave their homeland and found a new start in Knesebeck. Here they began to rebuild in modest circumstances. In 1955, Dr Hannshermann Butting joined the company and developed it into an internationally successful stainless steel processor thanks to his entrepreneurial foresight.

Born on 25 July 1925, he joined the family business at an early age. After (emergency) A-levels, studies in Göttingen, where he met his wife Ingeburg, and a doctorate in law, he took on responsibility at a time of great upheaval. Under his leadership, BUTTING developed into a globally sought-after manufacturer of high-quality stainless steel tubes and components. With entrepreneurial courage, a clear set of values and a flair for technical progress, he set the course for long-term success.

After German reunification, Dr Hannshermann Butting seized the historic opportunity to build a symbolic bridge to his old homeland: he founded a second company location in Schwedt an der Oder. In doing so, he not only combined economic commitment with social responsibility, but also a deeply personal gesture - his return to the Oder, where the roots of the family, the company and not least his own life lie. Dr Hannshermann Butting also developed his passion for rowing on the Oder, which he pursued with a strong focus on performance. In his new home, he generously supported the Isenhagener Land rowing club since it was founded in 1975. He loved travelling with young people on rowing trips. His love of nature accompanied him throughout his life. Whether in the forest or rowing - this is where he found peace and strength.

Dr Hannshermann Butting was the father of five children. His son Hermann took over the management of the company in 2000 and still runs the BUTTING Group today - in the seventh generation and in the spirit of his father.

Despite his success, Dr Hannshermann Butting always remained a down-to-earth person. He was down-to-earth, direct and straightforward - someone who communicated at eye level and loved open dialogue with his employees. They respectfully and affectionately called him "The Doctor".

Dr Hannshermann Butting's life's work has left its mark - in the development of the company, in the hearts of his family, his employees and in our region.
