Permanent: new marking for pipes from coil

Product traceability is an essential quality criterion. This also applies to longitudinally welded stainless steel pipes. With this in mind, BUTTING has optimised its manufacturing process for pipes from coil. In future, pipes produced from coil will be marked using a new procedure. This offers the customer one crucial advantage: the marking is permanently easy to read.

BUTTING had already addressed the issue of pipe marking some time ago. Various new procedures were analysed and extensively tested, based on customer requirements. A variety of different-sized fonts were tested over an extended period of time on different material qualities under strict quality criteria. The objective also included guaranteeing traceability and preventing product counterfeiting. As with quality control, traceability supports product standards and promotes consumer confidence. Therefore, it was decided at the headquarters in Knesebeck not only to mark the pipe ends, as specified by the standards, but to mark the entire pipe as well.

This new marking brings distinct advantages. The marking can be selected individually and variably; the quality of the characters is very good and therefore easy for everyone to read. The marking on the pipe is permanent, even after chemical treatment of the surface, for example by pickling.

Michael Fürstenberg, Sales Stainless steel welded pipes, says that the new marking method offers a further benefit: "Since the surface is only marginally altered, pipes can in future be taken from stock and ground."

Integration into the production facilities started in mid-February and will be continued step by step. In this way, newly manufactured products will be marked on selected production machines using the new marking process and will gradually come onto the market.

The focus of BUTTING's business activities is the manufacturing of high-quality longitudinally welded pipes made from stainless steels. A wide range of high-performance production facilities opens up extensive opportunities for our customers: from stock pipes and pipes with demanding tolerance specifications right through to pipes with special geometries or made of special alloys. The fully automated coil production process is technically the most sophisticated and economical process for manufacturing longitudinally welded pipes.
